Lines for an Old Dog

By Wynne Bruce

I remember, I remember
When first you came to me,
The mischief times
The puppy times
The times that used to be.

I watched you stalk a butterfly
And worry at a bee,
Putting the hens to scattered flight
Before you climbed my knee.

Too soon, those days have long since gone,
The gambolling, scrambling's done.
Now you're content to lie and dream
In a friendly patch of sun.
